First of all, I want to say thanks to the Yankee Romance Reviewers for asking me to blog. Thanks so much!
Since the third book in my Bigtime superhero series, Jinx, was released in September, I thought I’d talk about the ins and outs of writing a series. If you want to succeed as an author, you’re probably going to have to write a series at some point. Readers love them, and so do publishers.
As an author, I love writing series, either featuring the same main character or a group of connected characters, like in my Bigtime series. But it can be tricky to keep your mojo going over three or five or even ten books. It’s hard enough writing one great book, much less several that all take place in the same world.
Face it. We’ve all read series where the first few books were really, really great, but the longer the series went on, the more the books seemed to be the same. So here are some of my tips for keeping a series fresh:
1. Make your world big enough: Your story can take place in a small town, in a big city, in a fantasy country, or even on the moon. But you need to make sure your characters have plenty of places to explore, not only in the first book, but throughout the whole series. This could be anything from an ordinary restaurant to the local cemetery to a wizard’s keep to a colony of Martian invaders. Wherever your story is taking place, make it an interesting, multi-layered destination.
2. Explore your world: This goes along with #1. Sure, your characters may have a favorite bar or tavern they go to in every book, but that doesn’t mean they can’t venture out of their comfort zone. If your town is notorious for its creepy cemetery, than have your characters explore the creepy cemetery. Every time you write a new book, think of the new places you can send your characters to explore.
3. Don’t make your rules too strict: This one especially applies to series with fantasy, sci-fi, or other magical elements. Don’t make the rules for how your characters use their magic or plasma guns or whatever too limiting, or you’ll probably end up writing yourself into a corner at some point - and not being able to do something because your rules don’t allow it. Establish a few basic ground rules, and think and plan ahead about how your characters might use their magic in the future.
4. Don’t give everything away in the first book: If your character has a tortured past, don’t reveal all of it in the very first book. Instead, just reveal bits and pieces of information. I’m not saying you should cheat the reader. They need to know what happened to your character in her past, and there needs to be some resolution in each book, even if your plot threads continue over several books. But make the information and your character compelling enough so that it whets readers’ appetite to learn even more about her.
5. Have fun with it: This applies to whatever you’re writing, whether it’s a stand-alone book, a series, or even a short story. Because if you’re having fun with your world and characters, readers are more likely too as well.

I love series books. The way the character can develop naturally over the course of several books, it makes them more three dimensional. Just think of Eve from the In Death series...that's got to be my fave. The main problem in series, I find, is consistency...of character and world building. And let's not mention when the author has a WTF moment and decides half-way to completely alter someone's characterisation and the overall style. Nope, not mentioning any names.
I too am a big fan of series because it creates more of an interest in the characters/worlds if there are more books. When I read a stand alone book, I always want to know more at the end. I want to know what else happens, etc.
Some of my favorite series are: Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake and Merry Gentry, Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter, JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood, Gena Showalter's Lords Of The Underworld, Jennifer Rardin's Jaz Parks, PC & Kristin Cast's House Of Night, Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld, and Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires.
I love book series, you follow the charcters throughout the whole story not just part of it and watch them grow as individuals. You see more of the world that the characters live in. See what obstacles they might come across.
I really enjoyed Jennifer Armintrout's Blood Ties series. The four books flowed into each other nicely and ended with everything that happened in the previous books coming together quite nicely.
Even MaryJanice Davidson, what now 7 books into the Queen Betsy series. Gotta love 'em!
Dawn -- I love series too, including the Death series. But you're right. Sometimes, authors change things I like about characters or their world. That's why I think planning ahead in a series is so important for authors -- and what I try to do myself. So readers don't have those "what was she thinking" moments.
Sidhe -- I've enjoyed a lot of the series you've mentioned, especially Kenyon's Dark-Hunters and Ward's Brotherhood series.
Ruth -- I've also enjoyed the Betsy series. Those books are perfect when you're looking for a fun, light read. I've also heard people buzzing about Armintrout's books. Need to check those out too ...
Good Morning all and Hello Jennifer. I would like to Thank You for coming to blog with us today and I hope you enjoy.
I love series books as it like being a part of the family and watching it grow. You laugh, cry, drool, love, hate and so many other things while reading them. Don't get me wrong as I do love the stand alones too but the series just pull me in.
As for a favorite I don't think I could name any one in particular as I love to many. Also, I keep finding new series and authors to love. Ahh......looks like I'll never be without reading material at least. (grin)

Hi Jennifer,
I love series b/c many times the book is so good or there is a secondary character you fall in love with and want to see their story.
However, I have one complaint/request. There are some series out there that the following books are so bogged down with repetitive information from book to book to book that I feel if you took the new story line out & just printed it you would have half the # of pages. These books I usually wait 1 year a piece for so it is disappointing to me. Especially as the story itself is so good it could be fleshed out & made totally awesome. Obviously I'm hooked on the story line I keep buying but one I just received, ~15th in the series, I keep having to set down b/c I'm tired of the repetition not just in that book but the whole series. When I found this series it was the book ~1/2 through the series so when I bought all the series & read back to back the early ones weren't this bad. now I almost dread the repetition but love the underlying story.
I think this is sometimes done for the 1st time reader so they know the history but if the story is good then like you say half the fun in reading the whole series is going back & putting all the pieces together from previous books. Release in bits through out the series not everything in every single book.
Thank you,
Susan B.

I too get sucked in by characters and love it when a book becomes a series. I totally agree with Susan B about the repetition.
I think that authors should respect their readers' intelligence and give just enough prior stuff that newbies will realize that they better go get the earlier books.
Jennifer, Thanks for good pointers! I will definitely keep them in mind as I write.
I look forward to reading the Jinx series. :)
i like series, but not the ones that end in really, real cliffhangers, they just stress me out. i like the ones that each book is whole story and yet you get to meet the people you know again and again.
Another lover of series books chiming in. I love stories set in the same world but with each book letting new characters shine in the spotlight as hero and heroine while, at the same time, allowing us a glimpse at other favorite characters.

I love series books also. I love to see what is going on with the characters over the course of the series. Two of my favorite series right now are J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood and J.D. Robb's In Death Series.
Terra -- Thanks for having me! There are tons of series I enjoy --like the Wallflowers by Lisa Kleypas (well, anything by her really), the Ice series by Anne Stuart, the Dortmunder series by Donald Westlake ... too many to name here! And there are so many more I want to try ... ;-)
Susan B. -- Yeah, it can be frustrating to read the same backstory over and over again. But authors want people who pick up the 2nd or 3rd or even 10th in a series to be able to figure out what's going on.
Like you said, I think the trick is to sprinkle the information throughout the book instead of dumping it all in the first chapter or in a certain section.
SusB -- Glad I could help. :-)
Some of my favorite series are Eve Dallas, Sookie Stackhouse, The Promises Series by Sarah McCarty, Lora Leigh's Wild series, Karen Chance and Vicki Petterrson and the Riley series by Keri Arthur.
These are just a few of my auto-buys that have me hooked.
My favorite series is Deborah Cooke's Kiss of Fire and Fury books. I love great characters that can carry through to the next book.
I love series books, it like going home to visit your family when you read them. One of the author kill a main character in one of the series and I was sick for 3 days.
I enjoy series books, some of my favorites are the Dark-Hunter series. I'm also enjoying Colleen Gleason's Gardella Chronicles and Christine Feehan's Dark series.
Series books are great. You get to really know the characters and their world. I find those series I really love that the characters become apart of my circle of friends and family.
I want to say thanks to everyone who dropped by and left a comment today. Thanks for reading and writing!
I agree with so much of what you guys said. Reading a series is a great treat, since it lets you see various heroes/heroines grow and change and evolve.
And you mentioned some of my favorite series ... Dark-Hunters ... Black Dagger Brotherhood ... and even more I need to try! ;-)
I love series. I get to meet new characters and get to see my fave characters too. Jinx sounds great!
I love series books. I read several series and the only downside is the cliff hangers. You have to wait what seems like sooo long to find out what happens next.
I agree with some of the other posters, it annoys me when previous books in a series have to be rehashed. I dislike it when I read read the first 150 pages of a 300 page book being reminded what happened previously in the series.
Lets see, a couple series that read, Mary Janice Davidson's Undead Series, Patrica Brigg's Mercy series, Piers Anthony's Xanth... and honestly many more!
Darn!! I missed this...I was moving and didn't have internet...darn again!
