Why vampires and witches and demons, oh my? by Terry Spear

‘Tis nearing the bewitching hour, that’s why!

Ever since I was young, I loved Dracula. He was suave, sexy, handsome, and …did I mention sexy? When he swept the lady in her beautiful gowns off her feet and made her swoon, when he kissed her and …well, all right, the original story was not enough of a romance story. So now, authors from all over the world have united and brought us the REAL vampire…the one with foibles, a dark hero, not the fiend as portrayed in the original version. With happily ever afters. Sigh… And he’s sexy.

I love vampires, but I like my heroines to have some skill so that the vampire can’t control them with their charming abilities. So in The Vampire…In My Dreams, the heroine is a witch. And when Dominic, the newly turned vampire, tries to use his vampiric abilities to control her, he finds he can’t. In Deadly Liaisons, the heroine is a huntress, a telepath and psychic. So the vampire can’t control her either.

Not that I don’t like a story where a vampire must control his natural urge to compel a human to do his bidding. Those are fun too. But I enjoy creating a world where the vampire can’t do so and must deal with it.

I’m looking forward to All Hallows Eve and dressing up for the occasion. Not sure what I’m going to be. Since I work at a library…probably something like the Mad Hatter. So here’s to vampires, witches, and other interesting creatures that go bump in the night…werewolves maybe???

And speaking of which, Heart of the Wolf is up for the NOR Award, tied for 1st place and needs your vote!!! Thanks so much! And Happy All Hallows Eve! http://www.nightowlromance.com/nightowlromance/NORAwards/fall2008norawardsromancebooks.asp

Ooooh, I love the idea of heroines to have skills so that the vampire can’t control them with their charming abilities.

Heart of the Wolf, hands down! I prefer werewolves to vampires. Highlanders...well, those are a category of their own!

Looks like I've found a new author to read. I love when the heroine is a challenge and not so easily swooned.

I've already met Terry's wolf, now I need to get up close to that highlander.

Terry Spear/Terry Lee Wilde said...

RB--me too! That way the vampire has to work really hard to win her over. Which is the fun!

Beawhiz--hmmm-hmm! I love how loyal a wolf is to their mate. We could use some of that in the human population too. So now we do! In the form of sexy werewolves. :)

Hi Jill! Hope you pick up a copy or three and enjoy!! :) Thanks for dropping by and commenting!

Pam P--thanks so much, Pam!! Don't Cry Wolf is coming Mar 1. This time it's about a pack who runs the Colorado town, and the red wolf heroine arrives to stir up a mess of trouble. :) Winning the Highlander's Heart's sequel is nearly done and I hope it will be coming out next year, The Accidental Highland Hero. It's about the oldest brother, but one of the younger brother's, Dougald, will get his own book next. He's quite the lady's man, which usually gets him in all the trouble, but his older brothers are uncharacteristically in the hot seat first. :) Right now, Dougald is naked in a dungeon, trying to come up with a plan of escape in The Accidental Highland Hero. :)

That cover with the wolf is HOT. Wow. Yummy.

No need to enter me. I'm just dropping in to wave and say hello to everyone.

Good luck on the award, Terry!

Hey Terry

Vampires never inspired me much, but I love Poe and Phantom of the Opera. Those dark heroes just call to you.

Great way to negate some of the vampires powers and still making your heroine strong.

Looks like someone new to add to my TBR stack. Gotta love an author who has gorgeous heroes with supernatural powers, and heroines with attitude who are more powerful!

Hi Terry,
I loved Winning the Highlander's Heart and I'm looking forward to reading next book in the series..
I like vampires and werewolves, perhaps vampires a little bit more...Would love to read both!

Even the kids at the high school where I work are into vampires and werewolves. I can't remember the name of the vampire series they love so much, but a movie based on the book is being advertised on TV.

I like the idea of a heroine who isn't at the mercy of the vampire or werewolf. Makes it more interesting.

Hi Susan, thanks for dropping by and waving hi! Yeah, he's hot. And the one for Don't Cry Wolf, hmm-hm.And Highlander! Whew! Love a man in a kilt, especially when the rest of him is naked!

Hi Margay,
Thanks so much!!!

Hey Beth,
Thanks for commenting! Yeah, I loved Poe and the Phantom of the Opera!

Thanks, Naira Bell. Yeah, my heroines never stand back and watch the hero do all the work. It all started when I was a kid and I stood up to a bully....

Hi Eva! Thanks so much!!! You'll love The Accidental Highland Hero!! I'm finishing edits and will be sending it today to my editor. Can't wait to see what they come up with for the new cover!

Yes, I'm with RB - I prefer if the heroine can't be controlled by the vamp. (But then a really heroic vamp wouldn't want to control his heroine, would he?)

Good Morning Everyone and Welcome Terry!!

I have to say Terry that I think you have covered the best of basis with vamps, were's and highlanders. My preference is the highlander. Hmm...something about the brogue and the strong well toned legs showing off the kilt to make you wonder if whats under the kilt is as well toned and ready for battle. LOL!

For everyone out there that has not read a book by Sourcebooks, you really are missing soooooooo much. I have read several of their books and these Casa sisters have really got some major heat sizzing. I have loved each and every book and believe me I am very picky.

Well, I hope you all have a great and beautiful Sunday. Our little ghouls and goblins will be out in full force on Friday by the looks since Halloween happens to fall on a night that doesn't have school the next day. I always give out packets of hot cocoa and the kids just love it because it's something different and their parents usually let them have it as soon as they get home. It's also cheaper than candy, better for the kids and if I have any left over, which I don't usually, I don't have to gain 10 pounds eating what's left.
huggs,
Terra

Exactly, PL...I love your dog!!!

Right, Leah!

Thanks for having me, Terra! Which I totally forgot to say so in the beginning. :)

Yeah, Highlanders...hmm, well-toned under the kilt and ready for battle--of the most pleasurable kind! :) Love it! Thanks, Terra!

I love paranormal things. I always have. I love the fact that the hero can't just control the heroine, that she has some skills or powers to stop it. I would love to read about the werewolves.

Great blog, really great. My kinda book.

A heroine who can hold her own with a vampire, just makes the story so much more interesting, and a great challenge for our hero.

Estella said...

Looks like I have more books to add to my Wish List!
Love the idea that the vampires can't control your horoines.

Happy Halloweeen!

melanie said...

I like the Vampire books at least when the heroine can be herself and not at his whim.So please keep it up and is the Vampire in my Dreams going to be a series????

Terry Spear/Terry Lee Wilde said...

Hi Tigger, My werewolves are very much like the real wolves in the wild when they're in that form, but still have human sensibilities and have some of the wolf characteristics as humans--enhanced sense of smell, hearing, can see in the dark. :)

Hi, Mary, thanks! I was tired after work last night when Terra reminded me that I was supposed to do a blog. But get me started on the paranormal and I have a lot of fun. :)

I agree, Cathy! If the heroine doesn't challenge the hero, what's the fun in that?

Hi, Estella! Thanks! It creates so much more conflict!

Waving hi, Amber! Thanks for dropping by and commenting!

Years ago I remember watching a woman watching the hero fighting to protect her, and I was silently screaming at her, "Pick up the lamp and hit one of the bad guys over the head!" I actually wrote that into a young adult paranormal because that scene stuck in my head over the years.

Hi, Melanie!! Yes, I'll be writing the sequel to The Vampire...In My Dreams. Several have said they want the same characters in a sequel. And you see...there was a guy who changed the sinister vampiress who wanted Dominic for her own...He is now after Marissa. :) I have to finish another werewolf story and then I'll work on the sequel to The Vampire...In My Dreams.

Good morning Terry,

I'm new to the Casablanca writers but each blog I've read you Ladies seem like a great bunch!! I love me some wolves! I've seen you cover in several places & cudos on the nomination, it sounds like a a great read that I will be checking out.

Have a great week,
Susan

Thanks, Susan! Yes, the Casablanca authors are super! We have a paranormal group who post on Wickedly Romantic also--I try to put up some sinfully sexy studs on Saturdays...Kendra gives us some Frisky Fri pinups and Cheryl posts some naughty guys on Sundays...not all the time, but we do have to have our...*sigh*...inspiration.

I would love to be compelled or glamoured by a vampire at least once to see what it's like, but I'm weird like that. LOL

Deidre, I like the idea too...but my heroines don't. LOL :)
